One of the fascinating things about travel is contrasting the attitudes of the “locals”. Take cats for example — on my visit to a “cat cafe” in Seoul (see the random swill post ”Catte Latte”), the resident felines were exuberantly friendly — if not bordering on pat-psychotic, no sooner had you sat down, several types of the furry persuasion were instantly jockeying for position on your lap. Recently in Japan (apparently the ancestral home of the cat cafe) the cats in this Nagoya cafe were the antithesis of their Seoul sisters and brothers. They couldn’t have cared less — no pats, no lap sitting — stone cold nothing. They barely tolerated our existence. Typical cat-arrogance personified… but you have to admit, still somewhat cute.
